At NAUGC there was long discussion till 3AM on Apple relations with MUGs and HyperCard 2.1 many are taking the position that they will not distribute 2.0 and others are going as far as sending all HyperCard support questions to Claris's 800 number. I am not sure our answer is to abandon our users of HyperCard. Only time will tell how this may work out. It appears in the near future only a reader HyperCard stack will be supplied with system software and Claris is charged with having HyperCard make a profit or perish the product. The whole thing is short sighted on Apples part and a real downer for user group HC distribution and support. Mike Holms was scheduled to speak to us on this issue at NAUGC but he failed to show up. I already have and they refuse to release an updated listing. The BBS in a BOX CD has one on it that is a year old. Apple at this point will not release updates. They feel the groups officers change and that they should have some rights to privacy. I hope to get together a report soon with more details but it was really a good motivator and we learned a lot about how other groups handle finances, board responsabilities, how to get and keep volunteers, how LA MUG has a 100,000 newsletter budget with paid editor, advertiser and how BMUG will probably do 800K+ this year. Magnificient efforts and great ideas.... Other items of interest was Marc Canters dinner and deluge of how the System software should be licensed to IBM'ers, System 7 training was great along with HyperCard 2.1, Other neat items we picked up on were the distribution of Zen and the art of Resedit version 2, a gadget that comes in kit or prefab form that allows you to use an IBM monitor with your Mac. The fact that BMUG and many others will not sell HC 2 or support it as a result of Claris no-User Group distribution of HC2.1 by User Groups. The disk copy room at BMUG was really hot with a couple of Mountain copiers and a few others. They order 10,000 labels at a time and have sold several thousand system 7.0 sets already. We traded a BBS in a BOX CD for a BMUG CD and exchanged many experiences and how their offices came about. BMUG was a great guest and I can remember evening discussions till 3AM on hot user groups issues. We discussed establishing a central clearing house for User Group items and making resources available to other groups. I am going to try and put a group of items together for this purpose. Raines has agreed to keep contact with the User Group community as well. Looks like next years conference will probably be in Boston or NY. I really enjoyed this one and am looking forward to next years. Hi guys! Here are some volunteer and event thoughs... We find that if we create new programs that are eciting it will draft its own set of volunteers. We currently added to our yearly activities a bi-yearly regional training seminar where an all day session of Macintosh classes are available from among 12 topics. The classes are taught by professionals from around the Valley and members can attend for $5.00 per class. The first time this program was put in place we had sufficient volunteers come forward to plan and run it for each of the future events. Another item that took on a life of its own was our membership auction. We advertised the auction so that members could bring in all of there software/hardware they wish to sell and %25 went to AMUG with a cap of $100 commision on any one item. We were shocked with the results. Over 500 packages showed up for the auction and 25 tables were filled with Macintosh goodies. We barely got out after 6 hours. As a result of this event 6 volunteers were recruited that day to help register, tabulate and cash folks out. These same volunteers have requested to be a part of other programs and AMUG made $2,500 for 6 hours. Volunteers will always come when they are challenged and excited by the project. Design programs that can meet these parameters and do not worry about the volunteer force the first time an activity is enacted. If it has grass root support volunteers will come forward. The following events are scheduled by the Arizona Macintosh Users Group for 1991. Contact Michael Bean at (602) 892-5454 for more information. On September 7, 1991 AMUG will host its 2nd semianual 1991 Regional training extravaganza. Pre-registration fees are $5.00 per class and this guarantees you seating. Your fees must be received by September 7, 1991 for this rate. Registration at the door as available is $8.00 per class. A training session will be held on the tricks and tips of System 7.0 staring our own System 7.0 champ Dorman Bullard. Jeff Geertsen will wind up the meeting with the latest AMUG disk collection. On November 9, 1991 from 11-5PM AMUG will hold its annual fund raiser with over 200 new products donated by 100 companies in support of this annual Auction. Proceeds from this event will fund training and Macintosh educational programs for AMUG members for 1992. It seemed to me that there was something that I read that said you would be providing updates to this every 3 or 6 months? Either way it is time, the CD is certainly starting to show its age. If you have sent out notifications then my apologies. I have just recently moved and it might have gotten lost in the shuffle. I just went through a fairly long and arduous battle at AOL for you in particular and developers in general by getting permission for you to place Company and MUG PR notices in a special folder that I have set up for this purpose in the TeleFinder message base called "Commercial software." I also got permission to allow uploads of demo, share, and otherware in the files library as long as the file does not include someone elses copyrighted software of material unless you have permission to do so by the author or company. I feel that I have made some large strides to accommodate the developers out there that would like to expand there market but I have yet to see any other product info from you since that last debacle over TeachText? Let me know if there is something else that I can do to help, the TeleFinder SIG has become the most active SIG on AOL and this is all due to the cooperation of the developers and Rusty and the sysops, not to mention the users themselves. The test program will commence later this month in Mojave, CA. The Nemesis team is using a test program based on a Macintosh II computer, LabVIEW 2 graphical software and plug-in data acquisition boards from National Instruments Corporation, and a 68040 accelerator board from Fusion Data Systems. The Nemesis racer was first unveiled to the public April 13, 1991, in the 3M booth at the Society for the Advancement of Material and Process Engineering convention in San Diego, CA. Revolutionary in its construction, the Nemesis is built entirely of tooled, pressure-molded, carbon reinforced plastics. Macintosh CAD and engineering software was used extensively in its design and development. It is the first air racer in history to use tools, materials, and techniques this sophisticated. The aircraft has a 22-ft wingspan and is designed for 12 gs. The use of advanced carbon composites produces a very high-strength, but lightweight plane. The Nemesis, including engine and fuel, weighs near the 500-lb minimum specified in the racing class rules. The composite fabrication techniques used by the team also allowed for an extremely short construction time. The aircraft was designed and created in a little over 12 months at the Nemesis Air Racing facilities in Mojave, CA. I have 850 pit files to convert to DD, Fonts will have their own section, GIFs will have their own section, a new System 7 tools section will be available, and over 100 megs of new stuff is on-line with full descriptions. I am going to try something new with this release and see how many are interested. My experience is that several BBS users have requested a copy of the CD from our board and I believe if other sysops and User Groups had it available they could fill this need as well. I thought what a great fund raising idea. My thought is to offer sysops and user groups the ability to order the update for $50 plus $5.00 shipping and handling OR if they order before August 10, 1991 give them the ability to purchase 2-4 units at $45 each plus shipping and 5-10 units at $39.95 each plus shipping. In this way, User Groups and Sysops can make them available for $75 to their users. This would allow sysops and User Groups to get their upgrades free after selling the other disks and have a little left over for supplies. Users would still get a great value as retail is $119.00. The ONLY way I can do this is through pre-ordering. This will tell me how many extra CD's I need to press to meet the needs of this program. The worst problem we've run into so far is that it is impossible to set up some of our floppy based members with system 7 disks. The members with 800K drives must be content with system 6.0.7 because 7.0 won't (can't be made to by about 200K) fit on an 800 K floppy. This is a problem for them and it is also a hastle for those of us used to keeping an "emergency" boot up floppy with our current system on it. With system 7 you can't do it.
